Richard,

The black bar is what locks the ZIF connector.

If you place the adaptor down in front of you, with the black bar of the zif connector away from you (white part nearest to you). Place a finger on the black bar and gently pull up and towards yourself - this should lift and rotate the bar to unlock the Zif.

If you need anymore help ask - have you watched the video? I show the Zif connector operation.

I'm going to sound a bit dense here, but how do you open the ZIP connector? I've tried putting a little bit of pressure on the side the cable would go in, but I don't know if I'm supposed to lift up or push back toward the circuit board, or what. The thing looks so fragile that I'm afraid to exert too much pressure because I might break it.

Would in be possible to put up a few pictures showing it in the open position with maybe a few pointers on how to get it open. The light colored part just does not seem to want to move. I've tried using an iPod opening tool to get into the slot that the cable goes in and lift up, but that doesn't seem to be right.

I have a 5th gen 80gig. I mounted it on my bike so road vibrations over 60 MPH would cause it to frequently stop playing and lock up, finally the drive just died.
Bought one of these a few weeks ago, sure I lost 50 gig of space and had to cut my music library in half, But it was well worth it.
I just have to say THANKS.

Ouch! that high eh? At least the prices of the 32gb CF cards have gone down, right? The last time I checked a 32gb Ridata Compact Flash card costs 112 dollars on egghead. I wouldn't be surprised if the price has gone down further than that. Anyways, have you released a full list of the compatible flash cards that work with the adapter?

You're right they have become real. Sadly the price is too real as well I think the Microdia 64Gb is running at US$350 - so long way to go before it is affordable.

I do want to try them but Sterling (£) is going to sh*t against the US Dollar so it has become too expensive me for me to purchase.

But I do hope to get hold of these new cards to do some testing as soon as I can......

Hello Tarkan, it's me again. Hope the ipod classic project is doing well.

I'm commenting here again because last time I mentioned the microdia CF you said it was vaporware.

Now Pretec just released their own CF cards, a 48gb and a 100gb one. I'm wondering if it's compatible with your adapter. Hope you do an update on the compact flash ipods and see if these cards are compatible :)

Installed the flash card in my 5G iPod. I get the message about restoring the iPod, then prompt for admin password. However, when I restore I get the dialog:
The iPod "iPod" could not be restored because it is busy.

This is on a Mac with iTunes 8.0.1

It is not that much of a issue, if you just let the iPod power down then press menu again it will power up ok.

The other options is to leave the iPod in a dock, so it never enters deep sleep.

Becareful with Rockbox, looks like they have updated to version 3 and you may have issues with it and the iFlash - I am hoping to do some testing over the next couple of days.

It's only when I leave it overnight. I had a feeling it had something to do with timings.
I'm going to search the other comments for a solution or try to install RockBox.

Thanks!

PS - I've been getting around 14hours of continuous play. This is awsome!

Microft, Glad you like your iFlash'd iPod - it is rather good isn't it (even if I do say so myself!!!).

Are you getting the restore message after you leave iPod off overnight? if so that has been discussed previsouly due to the iPod firmwares agressive resume from deep sleep timings.

However, if you are getting that message everytime you are turning the iPod on - then it could be you have a bad partition table on the card, you would need to remove the card and rewrite the paritition table either via partition software or fdisk, etc.

Hi, I made the this mod to an 5th Gen iPod video.
Seems to work and the battery life is arounf 13,5 hours (tested).

The only issue is that when I turn on the ipod I get the same error message you get when when you replace the HDD for the CF card. It tells you to connect it to the computer. However if I reboot the ipod (Menu+Center) it boots fine. Anyone else having this happen to them?

Thanks! Loved this mod!

Hi Hammid,

Have you measured the voltage and is it 5v? The problem with dropping the supply voltage to 3.3v is that CF interface on the u810 will still be working at 5v levels which will probably cause issues.

One things you can try is that my adaptor forces the CF card in to 3.3v mode when you say the u810 is working the card at 5v. To switch the card to 5v mode you need to remove pin 33.

Tarkan,

Well, I found out the problem with using your adapter (or any other 1.8" CF-to-IDE ZIF adapters) in a Fujitsu u810 and not achieving UDMA Mode 5 speeds. Apparently, 300x CFs need to run at 3.3VDC to achieve UDMA Mode 5 speeds. My 300x CF can use both 3.3VDC and 5VDC, but it can only operate in UDMA Mode 4 if it uses 5VDC, which is what the u810 provides.

I need some type of transformer "thingy" to knock the 5VDC down to 3.3VDC in order to use your card at UDMA Mode 5 speeds. I've found other cards that have voltage selectors on their boards, but none with a ZIF connection.

Any ideas how I can knock the voltage down to 3.3VDC on the adapter?

Thanks,
Hammid B.

P.S. Your adapter is still working great in my 5G "60GB now 32GB" iPod video. I love how light the thing is now.
