Hey there, I recently saw a similar article for adding flash to an ipod mini, and had taken the steps to acquire the parts (awaiting shipping now). In the meantime, I’ve got my Ipod Video on ebay right now (80gig 5.5g if anyone is interested — shameless plug).. Anyway, my biggest reason for getting an ipod mini for doing this is that the ipod videos don’t seem to be fast enough to do all the necessary processing for the new audio formats allowed by rockbox. After you’ve had a chance to play rockbox on your CF’d ipod video, could you comment on its speed in relation to skipping/buffering problems? Had I of known about this CF/ATA adapter soon, I may have opted to just mod my ipod video (if the speed is there for rockbox i mean).

  8. 8 On February 1st, 2008, Tarkan said:

Seth, I will have a play with Rockbox this weekend, I have not heard of any talk about the Video Ipod’s being too slow for the audio formats offered by Rockbox - this is new to me.

In terms of CF performance even this slow 32Gb A-Data has a transfer speed of 2 - 3 MB/s, and the highest video/audio stream the iPod can handle is limited to ~400 KB/s. Also you cannot forget the 32MB builtin memory for buffering.

With the standard Apple O/S the CF version of pod is no different than the hard drive version - Video is smooth and Audio does not have any skipping.

  20. 20 On February 26th, 2008, Tarkan said:

No dual Cf adapters will not fit or will they work. The dual adaptors are configured to use the Cf cards as master and slave drives. The iPod firmware and software do not use this method of accessing the drive.

A company did produce a dual intelligent adaptor for CF cards which made two cards appear as one larger card but it is a big circuit board and very expensive.

  27. 27 On March 3rd, 2008, Tarkan said:

That is a hard one - Most of the time a iPod which powers up and displays the sad iPod icon is normally due to a faulty hard drive.

If you remove obvious physical damage like LCD’s - I would say 95% of broken iPods have faulty hard drives.

Where it gets complicated is when iPods have been opened then the problem scope increases to damaged battery connectors and sometimes damaged hard drive ribbon or connector.

When buying broken iPods stats are on your side!!!

  39. 39 On March 18th, 2008, Tarkan said:

Not sure, but I doubt it. The 60/80Gb battery is a few mm thicker than the 30Gb, but several companies now supply greater capacity 30Gb batteries and combined with the iFlash adaptor - you will get very good battery life.

    Hi Joey,

Welcome to the iPod restore loop problem. It is something which happens to the 5g iPods sometimes - search the web for the iPod restore loop (recovery loop) for ideas on how to fix it.

The Apple recommended fix is to change the drive letter that the iPod uses. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93499

Another fix is to put the iPod in to disk mode before restoring with iTunes (hold the Select and Play buttons while the black apple logo is on the screen after a reset - menu + select).

Also worth trying, is installing another version of iTunes or if you are using a windows machine try restoring on a mac.

Let me know how you get on….

  42. 42 On April 24th, 2008, Joey said:

thank you for helping, though, Ive already tried all these recommended solution.
However, the problem keeps happening, so, I assume there might be a problem on the battery. But, I am not sure whether this problem is related to battery issue.
    What do you think?

  43. 43 On April 24th, 2008, Tarkan said:

Unlikely to be the battery. Before you do anything you need to make sure the adaptor is fitted correctly and that the CF card is working in the iPod.

Easy way is to put the iPod into disk mode, then check you can format the iPod drive and read / write to it.

If not, then check your installation and then try another CF card anything over 512Mb will do.

  44. 44 On April 24th, 2008, Joey said:

In terms of Disk mode, everything is good, read/write perfectly, and everything is fitted correctly. what should I do, now…..

Whats wrong with that thing? Did you have something like this before? Is there any solution to that.????

    Thanks, Thomas

  47. 47 On May 2nd, 2008, Tarkan said:

    Hi Thomas,

It is possible that the card is not compatible. First thing I would do is to check you can access the iPod as a drive.

Press and Hold Menu + Select, when the black apple logo appears Press and Hold Play + Select, this should get you into disk mode. Connect the iPod to your computer, it should appear as a drive.

Now try formatting and reading - writing to the iPod. If this does not work then either you have a bad connection (faulty ribbon cable) or the card will not work in the iPod.

Try another card 512Mb and over will do.

Let me know how you get on. Good luck.

  48. 48 On May 3rd, 2008, Thomas said:

    Thanks for the fast reply…

I can go into disk mode. But it’s the same. I connect it to my macbook and itunes discovers a new ipod witch it wants to format. I do it and it starts … a minute later a window is popping up that itunes couldn’t restore the drive because the ipod is busy.

wich operating system are you using? Do You think I should try it on a windows computer?

Or is it the card? I mean it doesn’t say it’s data rates or anything…

  49. 49 On May 3rd, 2008, Tarkan said:

    Thomas,

It just maybe worth trying the disk mode on a windows computer to check you can access the drive, etc.

If that not work it maybe that the card is not compatible. Do you have another card to try?

  50. 50 On May 5th, 2008, Thomas said:

    yeahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    It WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Switched the card at the shop and tada!!!

So it was the Data Rate I Guess. I have now a SecureData 4 GB Ultra 2, I think, and it works all without any trouble. So thanks a lot for your support.

    hello again,
I got my ipod done and I was just wondering if yours still lagged a little when switching songs, like maybe a second if you have scrolled down the list and then selected another one, just wondering because it seems kind of slow, i think a lot of it is the processor and ram though. Thanks

  55. 55 On May 19th, 2008, Tarkan said:

    Hi Kyle,

I think the lag is worse with slower cards, my A-Data test iPod has more lag than my Extreme IV iPod.

The lag comes from the fact that the iPod loads in to memory approx. 32Mb of data (like the next few tracks after the one you have selected).

This lag occurs on the hard drive as well, and is much worse as the drive needs to be spun up to read ahead.

thanks, one more question, my ipod when left in sleep for a long time, like 10 hours, when woken up tells me to restore but if i restart it it works fine and i can connect it to the computer and everything. and ‘ve tried restoring it multiple times now but to no avail. It must be a software problem correct? Is it possible that it does this because it doesn’t think its sleeping right because the “hard drive” isn;t shutting down?

  57. 57 On June 6th, 2008, Tarkan said:

    Hi Kyle,

So far the deep sleep issue seems to be related to slow CF cards - the iPod firmware timing is very aggresive when waking up from deep sleep - causing the restore message.

  58. 58 On June 22nd, 2008, Kyle said:

did you experience the same problem when using rockbox?

  59. 59 On June 22nd, 2008, Tarkan said:

You would not have the same issue with Rockbox - it uses another method of sleep, which is not effected by the speed of the card.

    Hey Tarkan,

I just got my adapter in the mail a little while ago. I purchased a 32GB A-Data Speedy card, installed it, and restored the iPod software. Everything works well up to this. After I got the iPod software re-installed, I installed Rockbox. If I boot to the iPod firmware, it works great, but if I try to boot to the rockbox firmware, it gives me the following the rockbox screen appears, and sits for about 20 seconds and then displays this error:

    ATA error: -1

    Press ON to debug

I’ve tried several different rockbox builds, all with the same results. When I first got my CF card, I put it in my card reader and zero’d it out completely (dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb), at which point I wrote a fresh partition table with fdisk and let iTunes handle the formatting of the card from there.

Have you seen this behavior where Rockbox doesn’t like the CF card, but the iPod firmware does?

    Thanks,
    Jared

  61. 61 On June 28th, 2008, Tarkan said:

    Jared,

The current build of Rockbox does work but it seems to only work on certain cards (such as Sandisk Extreme range).

Someone on the Rockbox forum has determined that in version r16259 certain changes were made which has caused this ata -1 error on some cards.

If you have the means to compile your own build and have access to svn, then make a build of r16258 which is the last build known to work with these cards.

  62. 62 On June 29th, 2008, Tarkan said:

Everyone who is having problems with Rockbox, Good news!!! I have setup a development environment on a virtual machine and now have the ability to compile and build Rockbox.

I will do a build of version r16258 and will post it up for download.

When I get some time I will go through the Rockbox source code to determine what has been changed causing this ata -1 error.

I should mention this error only seems to effect slower cards (e.g. Adata 32Gb Speedy) - the current Rockbox build works fine on my collection of Sandisk Extreme III cards.

  63. 63 On June 29th, 2008, Jared said:

    Jared, nice one!!

I spent some time looking at the differences between build r16258 and r16259, major changes where made - but nothing jumps out as the cause.

I did notice in main.c they have moved when the i2c bus is init’d, I wonder if moving this back to its original position will fix this issue????

  65. 65 On June 29th, 2008, Jared said:

Yeah, I saw that move in main.c as well. I moved it back, but it didn’t seem to fix anything.

I google’d around a bit for the error message, and some other devices display this error when the battery is having problems. I noticed there were some power management changes between r16258 and r16259, so perhaps one of those changes is responsible. Just a shot in the dark.

BTW, I’m not sure if you want to continue discussing this on your blog post. If not, feel free to email me directly. :)

The problems you are having does sound like the ribbon faulty but before replacing. I would disconnect the ribbon from both ends and re-install. Also make sure the ribbon is fully seated in to the ZIF connector.

Also feel the iPod end of ribbon connector does it feel smooth with no sharpness.

If you think it may be the iFlash (very very unlikely, but you never know) I can send out another one to rule that out.

Contact me via my contact me page if you have anymore questions.

I did the Flash procedure y’day after buying a Transcend 32 Gb from Amazon. Things went smoothly, I charged the Ipod battery overnight and restored the Ipod today. But it gave some error (can’t access drive for write) when trying to sync with iTunes. So I formatted the drive as 32 FAT and using 16 units as allocation size using Windows. I’m trying to sync but the thing is SLOOOOOW. I understand this is no Sandisk Ultra but geez, this is way too slow. Maybe I’m doing something wrong. Any pointers as to what I should try next? Could something have gone wrong with my installing the iFlash adapter that could cause the slowness? Is formatting as FAT32 and the above allocation unit size the right thing? Thanks in advance.

Ok, the syncing failed again. It says Attempting to Copy to the disk ‘My Ipod’ failed. The disk could not be read from or written to.

Ok, some good news finally!! I formatted the card using Linux dd, did a restore from iTunes and just synced with a small batch of music files. And it synced!

Unfortunately, can’t get rockbox to load properly yet. I get ATA error -80 “No partition found”. Any ideas? I tried the patch build from the other port about Iflash and Rockbox but still the same issues.

Tarkan! Thank you so much for getting this device out to me so quickly. Even with the delay in payment processing, I received it in the US in less than 5 business days. I just finally got around to plugging it in and using the ebay purchased Samsung 32GB CF, and I gotta say, it was such an easy and painless process! My ipod is noticeably lighter, and feels almost hollow without the hard drive lol..

    thanks again!

    Hi Tarkan

I installed an 8GB Transcend 133 which works ok. I did the iTunes restore (Mac) and loaded some tracks but now the scroll/click wheel won’t work!! The ipod is stuck on the language menu and doesn’t respond

I tried flipping the hold switch etc but to no avail…

    Any ideas??
