I personally think these cards are just rebadged - i.e. someone sticks a topram sticker on the outside.

So I think the cards themselfs can come from several different manufacturers, so you really just don't know what you are getting.

Hi Tarkan,

thanks for that link. As always compatability is never that simple. According to reports the Topram 16GB will not work but the Topram 32GB will.

I was looking at a 32GB module so it looks like someone has managed to make it work but the fact that some Topram stuff does and some doesnt work isnt filling me with hope.

Cheers anyway

I have found some very cheap looking CF cards on Ebay. Has anyone tried one of these cards? Do they work in the Ipod CF conversion? Are there any reasons I should considenot buying this product?

Hey Mike,

I'm an American, and I consider myself fairly friendly. If you'd like me to get it from newegg and mail it to you in the UK, I think I could do that. Send me an email if you're interested (jpsutton [at] gmail com).

Ah...that is where friendly Americans come in to it....

Failing that, the next best thing to a friend in the USA is ebay, the A-Data is currently about £74 inc postage (which is much higher than the current $100 on newegg but that is life).

Yeah, I saw that move in main.c as well. I moved it back, but it didn't seem to fix anything.

I google'd around a bit for the error message, and some other devices display this error when the battery is having problems. I noticed there were some power management changes between r16258 and r16259, so perhaps one of those changes is responsible. Just a shot in the dark.

BTW, I'm not sure if you want to continue discussing this on your blog post. If not, feel free to email me directly. :)

Jared, nice one!!

I spent some time looking at the differences between build r16258 and r16259, major changes where made - but nothing jumps out as the cause.

I did notice in main.c they have moved when the i2c bus is init'd, I wonder if moving this back to its original position will fix this issue????

Howdy,

Until you get that up, I just built a copy of r16258 (for iPod Video 30GB model--does NOT work on iPod Video 60/80GB models). You can find it here:

http://jaredsutton.com/downloads/rockbox-ipodvideo-r16258.zip

I'm attempting to patch the current SVN revision currently. I'll let you know if I get it working.

Everyone who is having problems with Rockbox, Good news!!! I have setup a development environment on a virtual machine and now have the ability to compile and build Rockbox.

I will do a build of version r16258 and will post it up for download.

When I get some time I will go through the Rockbox source code to determine what has been changed causing this ata -1 error.

I should mention this error only seems to effect slower cards (e.g. Adata 32Gb Speedy) - the current Rockbox build works fine on my collection of Sandisk Extreme III cards.

Jared,

The current build of Rockbox does work but it seems to only work on certain cards (such as Sandisk Extreme range).

Someone on the Rockbox forum has determined that in version r16259 certain changes were made which has caused this ata -1 error on some cards.

If you have the means to compile your own build and have access to svn, then make a build of r16258 which is the last build known to work with these cards.

Hey Tarkan,

I just got my adapter in the mail a little while ago. I purchased a 32GB A-Data Speedy card, installed it, and restored the iPod software. Everything works well up to this. After I got the iPod software re-installed, I installed Rockbox. If I boot to the iPod firmware, it works great, but if I try to boot to the rockbox firmware, it gives me the following the rockbox screen appears, and sits for about 20 seconds and then displays this error:

ATA error: -1

Press ON to debug

I've tried several different rockbox builds, all with the same results. When I first got my CF card, I put it in my card reader and zero'd it out completely (dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb), at which point I wrote a fresh partition table with fdisk and let iTunes handle the formatting of the card from there.

Have you seen this behavior where Rockbox doesn't like the CF card, but the iPod firmware does?

Thanks,
Jared

You would not have the same issue with Rockbox - it uses another method of sleep, which is not effected by the speed of the card.
